Help! I Got Blackmailed on Telegram – What Should I Do?

Two hours ago, I made a huge mistake. I was messaged on a platform for some fun texting, added them on Telegram, and mistakenly sent a photo of myself along with another photo. The person then threatened to post those pictures on social media and share them with my family unless I paid them $300. They eventually agreed to accept a gift card. Panicking, I blocked them and deleted my Telegram and social media accounts. Now I'm worried they might have my personal information. I had my phone number private, so I don't understand how they found my time zone. I'm really concerned about whether this will spread to my family and friends and how to keep my phone and personal info safe. Can anyone offer reassurance or advice?

This kind of blackmail is common. If you're not proud of the pictures, tell people they are AI generated to deflect the situation. Most scammers aren't likely to follow through with actual threats because they prefer money over confrontation.

You’re right, I didn’t tell anyone yet. I’m just worried they might use my number somehow.

Make sure to avoid sending pictures like that in the first place. Always verify someone before sharing personal photos. Also, they can figure out your time zone through your phone area code.

I didn’t think of that! I thought I was being careful, but yeah, it was a dumb decision.

As soon as you mentioned gift cards, I knew this was a scam. Honestly, doing nothing might be your best bet. Of course, it’s tough to face, but in a month or two, it’ll hardly matter. Scammers just want fast cash and move on to the next target.

That's reassuring to hear! I feel somewhat better knowing it's likely they'll move on. Besides, they’re from Europe and I’m on a different continent.

The best move is to just say you have nothing to hide. Don't engage with these scammers. Block and report them immediately! Often, they move on once they realize you won't pay up.

That’s true! Panic wasn’t my best friend in that moment. After a bit of feedback, I feel somewhat better.
