Why Does My UPS Keep Failing to Protect My PC During Power Outages?

I've just purchased an APC UPS 1500VA Battery Backup Power Supply, expecting it to keep my PC from turning off when there's a power outage. However, it doesn't seem to work as intended and feels more like a fancy power strip. Am I missing a setting or misunderstanding its purpose?

If you notice your PC isn’t staying on during outages, consider that it may be drawing more power than what the UPS can provide. Each unit has its limits, so if your setup has a lot of peripherals running, that could be the issue too.

Just a heads up – the UPS has both backup and regular outlets. Don’t plug your PC into the surge-only side! If the setup is correct, but you’re still having issues, it might be a faulty unit that needs replacement. Also, check the battery's orientation and make sure it’s powered on.

Make sure your PC and main monitor are plugged into the battery backup outlets, not just the surge-protection spots. The backup is great for a few minutes to save your work and shut down properly, but it won't keep you powered indefinitely. Double-check the connections, and if everything is right, the UPS might be defective.

Confirm that the UPS is functioning correctly by checking if the battery is actually installed and charged. You should also connect the USB cable to your PC; it allows your system to shut down gracefully in low battery conditions. If everything's connected and charged, try testing the UPS with a lamp or a charger to see if it provides backup power without being plugged in.

If you press the display button, it'll show the battery charge and how much time you have left. Make sure the voltage sensitivity isn't set too low for a PC – you can adjust that in the settings. The manual has all the details on how to do that.
