Will Upgrading My GPU Help If I Have a Weak CPU?

I've currently got a 1050 Ti paired with a Ryzen 3 2200G and a VS400 400W PSU. I'm considering upgrading to a 1660 Super or Ti soon and might even use a PCIe adapter. I didn't think I'd need to upgrade my CPU before getting a better GPU. What kind of FPS loss should I expect due to my weaker CPU?

I've seen it all the way back to the AMD Socket-A days, and in my experience, upgrading the GPU usually offers a bigger boost than upgrading the CPU. A newer GPU can really transform performance, while a CPU upgrade might only improve it by about 10% on average. Just remember, the overall performance also hinges on how well your hardware and software work together, but a solid GPU makes the biggest difference!

You can check your GPU utilization in games to see how much performance you're currently getting. Try a game with FSR and put it in performance mode to cap your GPU usage. It should help you understand if you're hitting the limits of your current setup, even before you upgrade to the 1660 Super.

I don’t have the 1660 Super yet, so I'm curious about how to benchmark my current setup.

Your FPS is largely determined by your CPU. If your CPU can only push, say, 60 FPS in a specific game, upgrading your GPU won't make a difference—you'll still be stuck at 60 FPS. It's all about which part is the bottleneck: whichever can produce fewer FPS will dictate your overall performance.

Right? So if the GPU is maxed out, the CPU can’t keep up, and vice versa. Makes sense!
