Why Does My Windows 11 Keep Asking for Domain Credentials at Logon?

Hey there! I'm running into a frustrating issue with my Windows 11 client. After entering my username and password, I can see my desktop icons, but my taskbar icons are missing. Then, a pop-up appears, asking for my credentials again, and it says, "The system cannot contact a domain controller to service the authentication request. Please try again later." I try entering my credentials again, but nothing happens. When I log out and log back in, everything seems fine again. I deal with this every morning! My workplace pushes a cert to authenticate for domain resources, and it's strange that no one else using Windows 10 has this problem (even my secondary PC on Win10 is fine). This only started after I switched to Windows 11. Has anyone else experienced this?

Are you using fast startup? Sometimes that can mess with network card drivers and cause issues like this. Try logging in with your LAN cable unplugged and see if it still lags. If it does, there might be deeper issues with your drivers, or perhaps something's off with your group policies! I've seen similar problems resolved when we reworked those.

It’s worth noting that using just sysmon or syslog won’t catch domain authentication issues. You need to dive into the Windows Event Viewer for security and system logs to get the full picture.

Have you checked the logs? Seriously, logging is important here. Make sure you set up a system like Splunk or ELK so you can see what's happening in real-time. Without logs, troubleshooting will be tough. Also, keep an eye on your DNS logs and anything related to Kerberos or security—it could reveal some important clues.
