What’s a Fair Price for Developing a Custom Touch-Screen App?

Hi everyone! I'm in the process of setting up a testing facility for a client and I've run into a request for a custom app. Currently, we have a PLC that exports data in CSV format, but they need more. They want a touch-screen solution using a more budget-friendly device, like a Windows or Android tablet, instead of high-end systems like Red Lion.

The app will need to record data from a load cell and have a few specific features:
1. A user-friendly interface for entering information like PO numbers and assembly details.
2. A chart display that allows saving data in CSV or convertible formats.
3. The ability to directly export files via email with filenames generated from the entered info.
4. A modern, professional look while still being practical.

I'm trying to gauge a reasonable price for developing an app like this. Would something like $500, $2000, or even $10,000 be in the ballpark? I'm considering making this an ongoing service if the pricing is right.

The cost really varies based on the developer you choose. Some might charge as low as $5,000, while others could go up to around $20,000 depending on complexity. Given your requirements, it doesn't seem overly complicated though. If it's just for internal use at first, that might justify a lower budget initially. Do you foresee the need for any data validation or custom features later on? That could change things.

Yeah, it’ll start internal, but we might upgrade it for client use later. The main focus now is just functionality.
