I think I might have downloaded a virus on my Windows computer. About an hour ago, I received an email that looked like it was from a trusted source. It contained an SVG file, which I downloaded and opened in my browser. This led to a strange VPS script file being downloaded as well. I scanned my system with Windows Defender, but it didn't find anything. Thankfully, when I tried to run the file, Windows asked if I was sure, and that made me realize it could be a virus. I immediately disconnected my PC from the internet and I'm currently running a full scan. I'm really worried that my computer might be infected. Does anyone have suggestions on how to ensure my PC is safe?

If the SVG file only downloaded the VPS file and you didn't actually run it, you should be okay. It's a good idea to download Malwarebytes on another PC and install it on yours for a second opinion. Also, run the Malicious Software Removal Tool by pressing Win + R and typing "mrt.exe". If you're nervous about the SVG file, you can upload it to a cloud storage service for me to check it out—just let me know!
Don't worry too much if you didn't run the VPS script. Since you deleted the files and are now doing a full scan with mrt.exe, that’s a solid move. As for a system restore or a full format, that depends on your comfort level, but if you’re really worried, a full reinstall would ensure your system is clean.
The SVG file and VPS script combo is a known method for delivering malware. You did the right thing by disconnecting your PC! Besides using Windows Defender, I recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes, as it might catch what Defender misses. Also, be sure to check your browser's download history to see if anything else was downloaded.
