Is Upgrading to a Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 1500W PSU a Good Idea?

I'm currently running a pretty solid setup with a Ryzen 7 3800X, RTX 4090, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM. I'm looking to upgrade to a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, an Asus ROG STRIX X870E-E motherboard, and 96GB of DDR5 RAM. I've estimated that my system's power consumption could be between 899W to 1199W, which puts me right in the middle of my current 1000W PSU's capacity. Do you think I should also consider upgrading to a 1500W PSU? Plus, I'm open to any other suggestions for my build. Thanks for your input!

If you're mainly gaming, you might want to consider the 9800X3D instead. It could save you some cash. Put that money towards a good quality PSU like the Corsair HX1500i and maybe invest in a cool case too!

That’s kind of what my plan has been shifting towards. I’m leaning towards the 9800X3D and possibly getting that specific PSU since I've had great luck with my HX1000i.

Getting a solid 1200W PSU would probably be a smart move, especially if you're planning on doing some heavy gaming or productivity work along with it. That extra power could help keep your system stable during peak usage!

Yes, I’ll mostly be gaming, with just some light 3D modeling work in Blender for 3D prints.

The 9950X3D has a PPT limit of 230W, and the RTX 4090 pulls about 450W. Your 1000W PSU should handle that fine, even with some overclocking, but if you want peace of mind, a higher wattage PSU isn't a bad idea.

I think that makes sense. If you’re planning on overclocking, having extra headroom is definitely safer.

While a 1500W PSU seems cozy, a 1200W would probably suffice. For your gaming habits (1-2 monitors), the 9800X3D is likely more than adequate. Just be aware that modern games can consume a lot of RAM, so 96GB isn't a bad idea if you multitask a lot.

Appreciate your thoughts! I do mainly game with just Chrome and Discord open, so I think you're right about the 9800X3D being a better fit.

Tuning the 9950X3D paired with the E variant of your motherboard can be pretty complex. If there's no specific need for that combo, it might be overkill. You'd be spending quite a bit on something that has a steep learning curve without clear benefits.

I can see that. The E variant did catch my eye mostly for the extra PCI lanes, but I’m starting to think maybe it’s more than I need.
