Why is there a mysterious media device showing up after I reset my computer?

I recently did a complete reset of my computer, wiping everything and reinstalling the OS. However, after the fresh install, I noticed a Linux device showing up in my media devices, which is strange since I don't use Linux at all. Before the reset, I suspected that my PC was hacked because I installed what I thought was a game from a friend, but it turned out to be malware. After getting it checked by a repair shop, they assured me the system was wiped clean. So how could this Linux device still be appearing? Is it something I should be worried about, or could it just be a leftover that the hacker can no longer control?

It sounds like you might be seeing a partition on your hard drive rather than a malicious device. Sometimes when people install Linux alongside Windows, it creates an additional partition that can show up in your media devices. If the hacker installed Linux as a dual boot at some point, that partition could still be there. You should check your disk management to see if that's the case. It might just be a leftover from the previous setup!

Yeah, I checked my partitions and there were some labeled randomly. I'm just going to do a full format to be safe.

That sounds like a good idea! Better to be safe than sorry.

Windows can sometimes pull in devices that are on the same network, so it might not even be something malicious. If you haven't connected anything external, then it could just be that. The Linux logo could just be a leftover icon and not actually indicative of a threat.

That puts my mind at ease. Thanks for clarifying that!

Yeah, some of these devices can be so harmless, but they look suspicious.

Honestly, it sounds like it's a partition issue. You probably had Linux installed as a dual-boot option, and now it's showing up in your storage devices. Just go into disk management and check for any partitions that are still there, and you might want to reformat to reclaim that space if you're not using it anymore. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely check disk management.

For sure! It's always good to make sure everything is cleared out.

If you've completely reinstalled Windows, any media device showing up is likely just your existing hard drive being detected again. It's normal for the drivers of these devices to reload after a fresh install. Just double-check that it's not an actual device connected to your network causing this. You might want to look into your network settings as well.

I didn’t think of the network aspect. I’ll check to see if my WiFi is picking up something strange.

Good call! Sometimes it's just an external device that connected itself back after a reset.
