I built my gaming rig back in late 2020 with an AM4 motherboard, featuring a Ryzen 9 5900X and an RX 6800 XT. Lately, I've been experiencing some performance issues in certain games that seem to be tied to the CPU. I've also got a custom water cooling loop with acrylic tubing, and I really don't want to take it all apart to replace it. I noticed the CPU block I have is compatible with the Ryzen 7, but I want to confirm that switching to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D won't lead to any unexpected issues. Also, do you think the 5800X3D will provide a significant enough upgrade, or should I just wait to rebuild my whole rig along with upgrading the GPU? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The socket is the same, so swapping to a different AM4 CPU like the 5800X3D shouldn’t pose any problems. But honestly, the performance difference between the 5900X and the 5800X3D isn’t that huge. The Ryzen 5900X tends to outperform the 5800X3D in overall tasks, although the X3D can perform slightly better in some specific games. Considering your RX 6800 XT isn't really a slouch either, it might be better to wait for a full rebuild unless you're really itching for a new CPU.
