My Gaming PC Is Constantly Throttling and Shutting Down – What’s Going On?

Hey everyone! I built my gaming rig two years ago, and it's been running smoothly until recently. I've got a pretty powerful setup: 64GB of DDR5, an RTX 4090, an i9-13900k, a Z790 PG Lightning motherboard, and a Corsair RM1000x 1000 Watt Gold PSU, all housed in a case with a ton of fans (seven case fans, plus three on the GPU and three on my AIO cooler). But lately, I've been facing random issues like BSODs and unexpected shutdowns, especially when gaming. When I'm just using the PC, the CPU temp is fine, around 34°C, but as soon as I start gaming, temps soar to 100°C, causing throttling and crashes. I've updated my BIOS, made sure all my drivers are current, and even reapplied thermal paste a few times. I've tried limiting power to the CPU in BIOS, but nothing seems to work. Looking for any advice or tips, thanks!

Also, it'd be good to monitor what your CPU temps and load are like during gaming. Programs like HWInfo can show you real-time stats. Just understanding how the CPU behaves under load can give insight into what might be going wrong!

Definitely get those dump files! They can really help diagnose the BSODs. If you can boot into Windows normally or even Safe Mode, check the C:WindowsMinidump folder for crash logs. Zip those and upload them somewhere safe. Having multiple dump files is super helpful. Follow this guide if you haven't set up your minidumps correctly!

It sounds like you're definitely dealing with an overheating problem. First thing, can you check if all your CPU fans are working properly during gameplay? They might be stopping unexpectedly. It might also help to reapply thermal paste again or check for any dust buildup in the heatsinks that can affect cooling. Proper airflow is key, too—make sure that hot air is being expelled well and not trapped in your case.
