How can I access a letter from my dad’s old laptop?

Hey everyone, I'm in a tough spot. My dad passed away earlier this year, and he wrote me a letter for my 19th birthday that I really want to read. The problem is that his old Dell laptop won't turn on, even after charging it. I'm not very tech-savvy, so I'm hoping to find out if there's any way someone could help me access the files on it, especially since the letter was saved as a Word document. Do you think it would be possible to get help with this, or is the laptop a lost cause? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

You might have a few options! One way is to take the hard drive out of the laptop and connect it to another computer. This way, you could access the files directly. If that sounds complicated, I'd suggest finding a good repair shop. They can either try to fix the laptop to get it running again or just extract the hard drive and pull your files off of it. If your dad didn’t encrypt the drive, you should be able to access his letter without any issues. Good luck!

If the laptop was working before and has just stopped now, getting it fixed might be straightforward. A repair technician can help turn it on or at least retrieve your data. I'd recommend asking them to either revive the laptop or directly transfer your files to a USB drive. If you decide to go for a hard drive extraction, look for a USB to hard drive adapter like the one on Amazon; it's pretty handy! Hope that helps!
