Help! My Printer Can’t Scan After Switching Internet Providers

I recently switched to a new internet provider, and now I'm having trouble with my Brother MFC-J497DW printer. I can scan documents using Brother Utilities on my PC without any issues, but when I try to scan directly from the printer using its buttons, it doesn't connect. It seems that a firewall is blocking the connection. Is it safe to just turn off the firewall entirely, or is there a better way to allow the printer to connect without compromising my security? I'm not very tech-savvy, and I only ask here because my dad, who knows even less about computers, doesn't speak English.

First things first, make sure your network connection is set to private instead of public. If it's public, that might be causing the issue. It’s an easy fix! Just go to your network settings and switch it to private.

I checked and it's definitely set to private.

Did you get a new Wi-Fi router with your new provider? You need to ensure that both your PC and printer are connected to the new network properly. If they're not synced up, that could definitely cause issues.

Yes, we got a new router and I’ve already connected both the PC and the printer.

If you’re still having trouble, it might help to open specific firewall ports that the printer needs to communicate. You can check this link for the ports needed for your Brother printer: [Brother Firewall Ports](https://help.brother-usa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/52673/~//firewall-ports-needed-to-allow-network-communication-with-the-brother-machine). You might also find some helpful steps on how to open these ports in Windows Firewall in this video: [How to Open Ports](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5YODEKsOrA).

Thanks for the links, they seem pretty advanced, but I’ll give it a shot!
