Is It Worth Buying an AM4 Motherboard for PC Gaming in 2026?

I'm new to building PCs and I'm considering putting together a setup with an AMD R5 5600 and an RX 6600 XT. However, I'm worried that the AM4 motherboard I would need to get might not hold up for future games. I want to play titles like Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima, and the upcoming Neverness to Everness set to release in 2026. Given that, should I just go with an AM4 motherboard now or wait, save more money, and aim for an AM5 motherboard instead?

I'd recommend saving up a bit more and opting for an AM5 motherboard. It’s likely a better investment since AM4 is nearing the end of its life cycle.

If waiting only takes a few months, then sure, go for it. But if you're looking at a year or more, you might as well enjoy an AM4 setup now. You never know what new tech could come out down the line!

Definitely go for AM5. It offers higher CPU performance and future upgrade paths. I’d suggest saving up enough to get both an AM5 and a better GPU, rather than settling for lesser components now.

Buying new? Definitely get AM5. You’ll have more options to upgrade in the future with AM5 than with the old AM4 platform.

Can you even find 16GB of DDR5 easily these days? Typically people don’t buy single sticks for gaming.
