Range Extender vs Signal Booster: Which Should I Choose for My Office?

I work in the back of my old Victorian house, and I've been facing ongoing Wi-Fi signal issues. The connection is slow and often buffers, even though my office is on the same floor as the router and just one room away. I'm looking for ways to improve the signal from the router to my office. Should I opt for a range extender or a signal booster, or are there better options?

You might want to try connecting your computer directly to the Wi-Fi router using an ethernet cable. This is the most reliable method, as you'll have a stable connection without signal issues. Also, it's worth noting that what people call range extenders or signal boosters are essentially just repeaters, and they can sometimes make the situation worse. One other option you could look into is powerline adapters, which use your home's electrical wiring to carry the signal, but they may not be the best solution depending on your house's wiring condition.

Absolutely, a wired connection is hard to beat and can solve most connectivity problems.

Yeah, I agree with you—ethernet is definitely the way to go!

If you need to stick with a wireless solution, try reconnecting to the router using the 2.4GHz band instead of the 5GHz band. The 2.4GHz might be slower, but it penetrates walls better, and you should still get decent speeds—around 300 Mbps. However, if the router and your computer are so close, something might be obstructing the signal, like the old lead pipes in your house. While ethernet is the best option, you could also explore using coaxial cables with MoCA adapters for improved connectivity.

Great suggestion! If I had to rely on wireless, switching to 2.4G would be my top choice too. Just keep in mind that old house wiring might not support powerline adapters well.
