Why is my RAM not working with my new AMD setup?

I've always been an Intel and Nvidia user, so I've mostly stuck to that combo for overclocking. But now that I'm switching to AMD, I ran into a snag. I'm using a Ryzen 7 9700X on an MSI B650 Tomahawk motherboard along with a 1TB 990PRO and my trusty RTX 2080TI. However, I've discovered that my 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MT CL38 RAM doesn't support the AMD overclocking profile (EXPO), which led to random restarts when I tried to enable the profile for its rated speed. So now, I'm stuck running it at 4800MT, which is frustrating considering I paid a good amount for it. Is it a limitation with AMD that I can't use my RAM at its advertised speed? I really hope Intel makes a strong comeback!

The motherboards often have some quirks when it comes to RAM support. Depending on your specific motherboard, there might be ways to stabilize your setup, so don't give up hope just yet! Trying to manually overclock could help too, but it can be tricky. It would be great if they made it clearer which RAM works best with which platforms!

Sorry to hear about your RAM troubles! It might be worth looking for alternatives that are on the motherboard's QVL (Qualified Vendor List). If your RAM doesn't say 'EXPO', it could be causing issues with your AMD setup.

It sounds like your RAM needs to say 'EXPO' to play nicely with AMD for overclocking. I’ve read that the RAM just needs specific profiles to operate correctly. Have you considered returning or swapping it? Though I understand it’s tricky once opened.

You don’t specifically need different types of RAM for AMD. But to unlock higher speeds, you usually need to enable EXPO, which is just marketing jargon. Some folks say putting that profile on RAM helps manage the speeds, but if you're getting restarts, it sounds more like compatibility issues than anything else.

Just to clarify, EXPO is AMD's version of Intel's XMP for overclocking RAM. They’re basically different formats to store memory settings. Most modern AM5 motherboards do support both, but if yours is more limited, it could explain your issues. There might be a manual way to set it up in BIOS, so it’s worth checking out!
