Is KDE on CachyOS a Good Option, or Should I Switch to a Different Desktop Environment?

I've recently set up a new PC for gaming and installed CachyOS with KDE, but to be honest, I haven't been having a great time with it. I've only added the CachyOS gaming package, Thunderbird, and Okular, but I've run into various annoying issues. For instance, the keyboard shortcuts for locking the screen just don't work, and tweaking the default window behavior was frustrating until I figured out how to install a custom Kwin script. I also tried to follow a guide to set up a gaming mode similar to the Steam Deck by installing the gamescope-session package. However, that caused my DE theme to switch back to light mode, and the startup logo changed to the default KDE one. After reverting to a previous snapshot to fix the chaos, I've noticed even more weird glitches. I'm not sure if these problems are due to CachyOS, KDE, or my own mistakes. Since some people rave about their experiences with KDE, I can't help but wonder if I'm missing something fundamental here. I'm also considering trying GNOME instead, as I'm not too concerned about desktop customizations, or maybe switching to a different distro altogether, like vanilla Arch or Bazzite. Any thoughts?

If you're looking for a smoother experience, GNOME could be your friend. It might not have the same level of customization as KDE, but it's often considered more polished. Just be advised it’s more touch-friendly than desktop style.

It's odd that the shortcuts aren’t working. Windows key + L is usually the lock command by default, but maybe it got changed in your setup. As for your gamescope installation causing issues, that shouldn’t happen just from adding a package. Perhaps ask for some advice with the tutorial you used? Also, about switching to Bazzite, I had a rough time with that distro and wouldn’t recommend it personally.

If you were to switch to something like Fedora KDE, you might find a smoother experience and be gaming without issues by now! Just my two cents based on personal experience.

You might be running into the usual bugs of rolling-release distros. For something more stable, why not try MX Linux, Mint, or Ubuntu? They’ve got a good track record for reliability.

I’ve had an awesome experience with Fedora KDE as well! I’ve never had major glitches like themes resetting or shortcuts failing. It sounds like CachyOS might be the culprit here.
