Will My Unsupported RAM Work with Ryzen 7000 Motherboards?

I recently purchased RAM (G.Skill Ripjaws F5-6800J3445G16GX2-RS5K) rated for 6800 MT/s, but I've noticed it's not listed in the QVL for Ryzen 7000 motherboards. I'm looking at the Gigabyte B850 EAGLE WiFi6E and the B650E AORUS Elite X AX ICE, and while my RAM is listed for Ryzen 9000, it doesn't show up when I filter for Ryzen 7000. I assume this is because my RAM kit was released after the Ryzen 7000 series, and it hasn't been tested. Should I expect it to run at 6800 MT/s with a 7800X3D processor, or might that be risky?

Your RAM should run fine. It might not achieve 6800 MT/s in a 1:1 or even 2:1 ratio, but it will probably be stable at lower clock speeds.

It should work, honestly. I don't understand why RAM manufacturers put specific CPU compatibilities on their boxes; they can be misleading sometimes.

Yeah, early Ryzen chips were picky with certain RAM, especially with earlier BIOS versions. It could matter!

I used the B850E in my latest build, and it worked perfectly with a 6000 CL28 kit—no crashes or hiccups. You should be fine with it!

6800 MT/s can indeed be tricky with the 7000 series. Sticking to 6000 CL30 or CL32 would be your best bet to avoid issues.

Typically, Ryzen CPUs struggle to run RAM faster than 6000 MT/s reliably. You might get lucky with 6400 MT/s, but for 6800 MT/s, it's highly probable you'll need a clock divider, and performance won’t really show up until around 8000 MT/s. I'd recommend running your RAM at 6000 MT/s to play it safe.

Tweaking the timings may help with latency at a lower speed. That's a good option to consider.
