Can Self-Taught Programmers Land Their First Job?

Hey everyone! I've been studying programming on my own for quite a while now and feel pretty confident about my skills. I have a solid understanding of some architectures like clean architecture, and I know when to apply it. My main focus has been on Flutter, but I'm open to working in other areas of tech as well. Although I haven't worked with a lot of frameworks, I'm sure I can learn on the fly since I have a strong foundation. I'm currently studying to become a technologist, but I'm eager to find a job now, even if I don't have a formal degree. Is it really possible to get a job as a self-taught programmer without a resume full of credentials? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

Having a CS degree definitely gives you an edge, but it’s not the only way in. If you don’t have one, consider applying for roles that aren’t strictly programming-related. Sometimes, starting in a different position can help you transition internally to a tech job later. Just make sure you’re looking for opportunities to showcase your coding skills, even if it’s just on the side!

Definitely, it's possible to get a job as a self-taught programmer! I got my start that way too. However, the job market is pretty tough for juniors right now. It can feel like you have to really stand out to catch someone’s eye, especially with a lot of competition out there.

Totally agree! I'm just focusing on sharpening my skills while I wait for the market to improve a bit.

What do you mean by the market being tough? Are junior roles really that rare?

It really is possible! I've been around for a while and started as self-taught too. If you can show your skills in unique ways, like contributing to a project or working on something for a startup, that might help you stand out. It's also important to have something that differentiates you beyond just saying you can code. Maybe think about what sets you apart and highlight that in your applications.

It's definitely possible! But it can be tough. I've seen many people find success without a formal education, just make sure you've got something tangible to show potential employers.

Have you built any projects or apps yet? That can really help when you're trying to get hired as a self-taught programmer!

I’m self-taught too, but honestly, my foundations are shaky. Somehow, I still manage to get things working, but I haven’t landed a job yet. It’s frustrating but keep pushing forward!
