What’s the Best Office Chair for Back Pain: Is the Aeron Worth It?

I've recently been struggling with lower back pain after long hours at my desk, so I'm looking to invest in a better office chair. I work as a sysadmin, which means I'm seated for extended periods with occasional physical activity. My current inexpensive chair just isn't cutting it anymore.

Here's what I'm hoping to find:
- Strong lumbar support (adjustable would be great)
- A mesh back for breathability
- Adjustable seat height and tilt
- Durability; I need something that won't break down in a year
- My budget is around $500.

I've seen a lot of buzz around the Aeron and other ergonomic chairs, but I'm eager to hear real experiences from those in IT or similar fields who sit for long stretches. What chair has genuinely helped with your back pain?

While the Aeron is highly recommended, consider how you sit and work. A good chair can only do so much; moving around regularly and maintaining good posture are crucial too. Keep in mind, it’s not just about the chair—sometimes it's the way we sit that causes issues in the first place.

I've got a classic 1996 Aeron, and it's still going strong! I've had to replace a few minor parts over the years, but overall it's held up really well. It definitely shows how durable these chairs can be after all that time.

I've had my Aeron C for 25 years! I did have to replace a few parts like the lumbar support and casters, but it's still my go-to chair. If you can, get your company to foot the bill or split it with them; you can always take it with you if you leave.

I have a second-hand Aeron C and I've been using it for 12 years. While it's not the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in, my back and posture have significantly improved since I switched from a cheap office chair. It's got plenty of adjustments and is really well-built. It's a solid choice and I've even bought another refurbished one for my office.

I recommend checking out used office supply stores. You can find high-quality chairs for a fraction of the price, often in great condition. I can't justify paying full price for a Herman Miller or Steelcase chair when I can buy them used for so much less!
