How to Factory Reset a Laptop from Marketplace If BIOS is Locked?

Hey everyone! My girlfriend surprised me with a laptop from a marketplace, but I'm a bit skeptical about its safety. It seems to have been reset, but I want to do a factory reset myself before downloading anything—just to make sure there's no malware hanging around. Unfortunately, every time I try to reset it through the settings, I get an error message saying there was an issue.

I downloaded the Windows installer to a USB from another computer, but the laptop's boot menu isn't recognizing the USB at all. I also tried to enter the BIOS setup hoping to change the USB settings, but it's asking for a password I don't have.

I could use the laptop as it is for gaming, but I'm not sure about that. Any advice on how to proceed? I really appreciate any help!

It sounds like the seller may have locked the BIOS which can be a red flag. If you really think it could be a scam, you might want to reach out to them for the BIOS password if you haven't already. Just be cautious!

That was my suspicion too. My girlfriend contacted the seller for the BIOS password, but I’m not holding my breath on a reply. Thanks for your input!

What brand and model is the laptop, by the way? Knowing that can really help narrow down the solutions!

It’s a Dell Precision 5540.

Instead of stressing over the BIOS, check for any info on the laptop’s make and model online. You might find a way to reset the BIOS by removing the CMOS battery or shorting a pin on the motherboard.

You could try using this site to bypass the BIOS password: bios-pw.org. It might help you reset the BIOS without the password.
