Could I have been scammed over the phone?

I recently received a call about a credit card that I didn't apply for. During the call, I was a bit out of it and ended up giving the caller a verification code they sent me—something like "8790." Now I'm really worried that I might have messed up. They also asked for my birth date and my city of residence. What steps should I take now? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It's hard to say for sure, but if you use any accounts that require a verification code for login, it's definitely a good idea to change your passwords across all those accounts just to be safe.

Thanks! What else should I look out for? I've been thinking they might be able to see my screen or something. I just don't get why they needed that verification code.
