Why Can’t My GTX 1080 Achieve Over 60fps on My New Monitor?

I recently got a Dell S2725QS monitor, which is supposed to support 4k at 120fps. While I know my GTX 1080 won't hit that mark, I want to reduce the resolution to try to reach 120fps. I've tried several games and tweaked settings in both the Nvidia control panel and Windows settings. I've also used both DisplayPort and HDMI cables, but I can't see my display going above 60hz. Are there any suggestions on how to fix this issue? I've already checked my settings and want to avoid any redundant advice. By the way, my PS5 works perfectly fine with this monitor without any problems.

It sounds like you might have missed setting your monitor to 120hz in the control panel, or you could be using a cable or port that can’t support that refresh rate. I had a similar experience with my old 1070; I couldn’t enable 144hz at first due to either the cable or port type. Double-check those settings again!

I've gone through the Nvidia and Windows settings multiple times and there’s no way that’s it. If my cable was bad, wouldn’t I still be able to select the 120hz option? I can change it in both settings, but it never actually shows that higher refresh rate. My FPS counter stays locked at 60, and I've also made sure to remove any FPS limits in the games.

Make sure to check your monitor’s manual! It should clarify if the display mode you want is supported and how to check what’s currently active. For your model, 1080p at 120hz is possible with both HDMI and DisplayPort. You can find this info by going to the monitor menu, then navigating to More Information and looking at the Display Info. If your setup isn't showing up as desired, the OS might need fixing. It’s often a random Nvidia setting that needs adjustment.

Could the age of my DisplayPort cable be a factor? It's a few years old now, and I’m just wondering if that might affect performance.

The GTX 1080 has HDMI 2.0, which is limited to 4k at 60hz. For 4k 120hz, you would need DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC support, which depends on whether your monitor can handle it. As for your PS5, it uses HDMI 2.1, which supports those higher refresh rates just fine.
