Why won’t my new i7 CPU work in my setup?

I'm having a frustrating issue with my PC build. I originally had an Intel i3 12th generation processor, and I recently bought an Intel i7 12th generation CPU to upgrade. However, after I installed the i7, the system wouldn't show any video output, and none of the peripherals powered on. I've removed the RAM and cleaned various components, but nothing has worked. When I put the original i3 back in, everything works fine again. I'm looking for any advice on what might be causing this problem!

We need to know what specific parts you have in your system. Can you list them, especially the motherboard? The compatibility can really vary based on that. If you're using a basic motherboard like an H610M-K, it might not be able to deliver enough power for the i7, which could explain why it's not working. The i3 might actually outperform the i7 in that case because of power limits.

Yeah, I agree! If that motherboard can't handle the i7's power needs, it could throttle it too much. Make sure you check your motherboard’s specs.

Also, have you checked if you need a BIOS update? That could potentially help with compatibility.

Exactly, details about your components are crucial. Have you upgraded the BIOS since you got the new CPU? Sometimes the motherboard needs a firmware update before it can recognize and function with a new processor. If your board won't update, it might be a dead end for the i7 unless your BIOS version supports it.

My motherboard won't update; I think it's just not compatible with the new CPU.

It sounds like you're in a tough spot. Might be time to consider a different motherboard for that i7!
