Why Are Work Phones Used Instead of MAM for Data Security in 2025?

I just started a job at a company in a highly-regulated sector where we all get issued work phones. Now I'm stuck carrying two iPhones because the work phone is really just used for 2FA, email, and Slack. It's against company policy to share the work phone number and my coworkers never use it to call me. So I'm wondering, why is this the norm in 2025? What's the issue with mobile application management (MAM) on personal devices? I'm curious why we can't use physical OTP keys like we did decades ago, especially since my employer isn't tight on budget. Is there a security concern with MAM that explains this choice? I just want to understand the logic behind it without stepping on any IT toes.

The decision to use work phones over MAM usually stems from compliance or client requirements. It may not be the best option, but changing to something more efficient can be complicated and costly. Companies tend to stick with their current practices despite better alternatives being available since it's easier to maintain the status quo than to overhaul everything.

Got it! So it's more about sticking to what's already in place, even if it's not ideal. Makes sense!
