I had a concerning realization recently: if my phone stops working, I might lose access to my two-factor authentication codes stored in the Google Authenticator app. I think I have some recovery codes saved, but I want to know what would happen if I can't recover those codes. Would I lose access to my accounts completely? I'm looking for insights on this situation.

Now Google Authenticator syncs to your account in the cloud, which is great! In the past, you’d be in big trouble if you lost it, but as long as you can access your primary account, you should be alright.
I once had my phone break while I was traveling, and it was my only device. I was able to move my SIM to a cheap prepaid phone and used text message authentication to access my Google account, so double-check your backup email and alternative auth methods!
Make sure you have your recovery codes saved in a secure place! If you're counting on them, you really need to know for sure you have them; otherwise, losing access to 2FA can mean losing access to your accounts.
If you lose your phone and need to replace it, you can usually use a cloud backup to restore your apps, including Google Authenticator. When I upgraded my phone, I let the cloud reinstall everything, and my authenticator worked perfectly afterward.
I use Proton Authenticator, which I have on both my Windows PC and iPhone. This way, I have multiple ways to access my codes!
