What happens if I install an 8GB RAM stick in my laptop that’s capped at 4GB?

I have a Lenovo Ideapad S130-14IGM that says it can only handle a maximum of 4GB of RAM. I also have an 8GB RAM stick that's compatible with my laptop. I'm curious about what will happen if I install this stick—will it work, or get limited to just 4GB?

If you install that 8GB RAM stick, your laptop will probably only recognize and use 4GB of it. Most likely, it will just ignore the extra memory since that’s the max it supports.

Will it make my laptop slower at all?
