I have an HP laptop and I was using it last night without any issues. But when I tried to use it again this morning, it started up fine and I even entered my password. However, as soon as I clicked on Chrome, the screen went dark. The power indicator lights are still on, so it seems like it's not completely off. What should I do? I'm worried about getting in trouble for this.

If the screen stays dark after trying to wake it up, it might be worth checking if there’s an issue with your display driver. You can try booting into safe mode and see if the screen works there. Updating or rolling back the driver could help resolve any glitches.
It sounds like your laptop might have gone into hibernation mode. Sometimes, if it’s inactive for a while, it can automatically dim or turn off the display. You could try pressing any key on the keyboard or moving the mouse to see if it wakes up. If that doesn’t work, holding the power button down for a few seconds can force it to restart.
When you say the screen is dark, can you still see a faint image or is it completely black? If it's just dark, try adjusting the brightness settings. You might have accidentally lowered it. If it’s just black and nothing responds, then a hard reset could be the way to go.
