Is My PSU Too Weak for My New GPU?

I'm feeling really anxious about my new PC build. After choosing a budget 500W PSU without much thought, I recently upgraded to a higher-end GPU, the 6700XT. I just found out that the wattage requirements for this setup are much higher than what I'm currently using. Since the upgrade, I've experienced some hiccups during gaming and even a random restart. My biggest worry is that I could potentially damage my components if I continue to use this underspec PSU. I'm also hearing some strange buzzing noises and experiencing stutters even when just watching videos, which is adding to my anxiety. I know I made a mistake going for a cheaper PSU, and I want to know if it's really risky to keep using it in this state. Can anyone share experiences or advice on how serious this situation is?

You shouldn't fry anything with an underspec PSU, but you'll definitely have performance issues. If you can return that 500W unit, I’d suggest doing it and getting a stronger PSU instead before any real problems arise.

You're in a tricky spot with that 500W PSU, especially after upgrading to a 6700XT. That card can draw around 230W under load, which doesn't leave much room for everything else in your build. Those stutters and restarts are definitely warning signs that you shouldn't ignore. I'd recommend replacing the PSU ASAP. It's one of those parts you really want to prioritize for system stability. You've got this!

Definitely agree with this. It's better to replace it now than to risk damaging your system. Plus, you'll feel more secure with a reliable PSU.

While you're not going to fry your entire system immediately, that PSU is definitely not cut out for the 6700XT. You really should think about getting a more powerful unit—ideally 650W or more—to ensure everything runs smoothly. Just out of curiosity, what are the rest of your specs? That might help determine how urgently you need to replace it!

Yeah, and definitely check your PSU model. Some might be fine, but others can really fall short under load.

The 6700XT will pull quite a bit of power, especially in demanding games. While the PSU is likely okay for now, those small stutters might be caused by something unrelated like driver issues. But I would still play it safe and look into upgrading your PSU. It’ll save you a lot of headaches long-term!

Have you considered lowering your GPU’s power consumption? It could ease some of the load. Also, if you switched from an Nvidia GPU, make sure to uninstall the old drivers completely using a tool like DDU to avoid any conflicts. But honestly, getting a new PSU should be your priority.
