Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade from my iPhone 15 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max. Usually, I don't have any issues buying a phone outright and activating it with my number, even though I'm not an authorized user on my account. Unfortunately, my parents won't add me as an authorized user, but I've managed before without problems. However, during my last visit to the store, they told me I need to be an authorized user to purchase the new phone. Is that really the case? I'm paying out of pocket for an unlocked device, so I'm confused about why that rule would apply. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This can vary depending on your carrier's policies. You should easily be able to buy the phone outright, but getting it activated and transferring your number might be trickier without authorization from your parents.
Have you considered just buying the phone and using the quick setup method? Putting the new phone next to your old one usually works wonders for transferring service. Might be worth a shot!

Exactly! I usually do that transition without issues, so I was really surprised when they turned me away.
