Can My Old Gaming Desktop Run Ubuntu for Emby Server?

I'm dealing with some issues on my aging gaming desktop since Windows 10 is on its way out. It's acting up with constant restart prompts and reminders to upgrade. Here are my specs: an i7 930 CPU, Asus P6TD Deluxe V2 motherboard, 12GB of DDR3 RAM, dual Nvidia 680 graphics cards (which feels like overkill for what I need), and an Asus PCI Express card for SATA 3 support for my SSD boot drives. I noticed that Emby supports Ubuntu. Will Ubuntu work well on an older machine like this without causing too many headaches? Also, where can I find support for drivers for such outdated hardware in Linux?

Your specs should handle Ubuntu without any problems! Check out their [system requirements](https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements) for a reference, and I think the server requirements will be similar. Just a heads up though, I’ve heard that dual GPUs can sometimes be tricky, but I can’t speak from personal experience on that one.

Honestly, an i7 930 with 12GB of RAM is pretty decent, especially compared to my setup with a Celeron N3160 and only 4GB! Linux should not have any issues running on your hardware. The good news is that the necessary drivers are typically included in the kernel, much different from Windows. So, unless you're trying to run really new Nvidia drivers that aren't supported by your kernel, you should be good to go!

You might hit some bumps with the older GPUs, as there’s often limited support for that hardware. Just a caution, you might want to look into that before diving in.
