I'm looking to upgrade my rig while sticking to the AM4 platform. Right now, I've got an MSI B550M Pro-VDH motherboard, an RX 9070 XT GPU, and 16GB of DDR4 3200MHz RAM. My goal is to achieve smooth gaming at 1440p or light 4K and full productivity without causing a bottleneck with my current components. What CPU do you recommend that pairs well with my setup?

At the current prices, the Ryzen 5 5700X or Ryzen 7 5800X are probably your best bets. I'd recommend checking out secondhand markets to see if you can find a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D for a decent price since they perform really well for gaming. Just keep an eye out for any deals.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D would really shine with your setup, especially since you have a powerful GPU. However, keep in mind that these X3D CPUs have gone up in price on the used market, so it might make sense to consider the standard Ryzen 7 5800X as an alternative, as it’s still a fantastic performer.

I'd suggest looking into the Ryzen 5 5900X if you can find one. The recommendations for the 5800X3D are solid, but make sure to factor in pricing and availability as they can get steep. Performance-wise, the 5900X should handle gaming and productivity tasks with ease.

It really depends on your budget. If you're looking for an X3D chip, those are solid but can be a bit tricky to find at a reasonable price right now. Otherwise, the Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X are excellent choices and should pair nicely with your GPU without breaking the bank.

Just a heads-up, with your current 16GB of RAM, you might want to consider upgrading to 32GB for modern AAA games. I've seen significant differences in performance, especially for multitasking during gaming sessions.
