I'm looking to replace the CPU cooler on an older build and need some guidance. The Cooler Master 212 is currently listed as compatible only with AM4 and AM5, but I'm wondering if it still comes with the right mounting hardware for AM3+. The original CPU cooler was compatible back in the day, but now I'm unsure if I should try to find an older version. If the 212 isn't an option anymore, what are some decent and affordable alternatives for the AM3+ socket?

The Hyper 212 should fit just fine! You just need to use the AM4 mounting bracket under the motherboard. Make sure that the protrusions align with the motherboard holes. If they don't, you can grab an AM3 mounting bracket from Amazon. Just line up the screws with the bracket protrusions and secure it down—it's easier to do outside the case if you can.
If you've still got the original clip brackets for the AM3 socket, you can use pretty much any clip-mounted cooler from AM4 or AM5! I've got a Wraith Prism RGB that I use on various boards, and it works great for testing out different setups.
Honestly, why not just swap out the fan? If it's for an older relative, keeping the costs down might be key. But if the whole cooler is iffy, an upgrade can ensure it runs smoother. Just note that if the current CPU cooler has died, you'll need something reliable to prevent any thermal throttling.
