Help Me Choose the Right CPU for My Nephew’s Gaming PC

I'm looking for some advice on which CPU to buy for my nephew for Christmas. He needs it for his gaming PC, mostly for playing Fortnite. He usually upgrades his parts every year, so I feel comfortable getting him a new chip. I'm unsure if there's a noticeable difference between the two options I'm considering—one is priced at $320 and the other at $400. Any insights on whether the extra cost is worth it would be appreciated! Here are the options: 1) AMD Ryzen 7800X3D at $400, and 2) AMD 9700X at $320.

Make sure he has the right motherboard first! Both CPUs require different types, and the 7800X3D specifically needs an AM5 motherboard. It’s also worth checking if he has DDR5 RAM, as that's what's needed for these chips and can be pretty pricey.

Good call! Can’t overlook the RAM and motherboard compatibility—that could make or break the upgrade.

Honestly, if he's mainly playing Fortnite, both CPUs will perform well. The 7800X3D is geared more towards gaming and delivers better performance, but if your nephew's existing setup can’t fully leverage it, the 9700X is a solid choice and cheaper too. It's a matter of whether you think the price difference is justified for him. If it were me, I'd go for the 7800X3D if budget allows.

More money usually means better performance—especially for gaming! If he's planning on sticking with gaming for a while, the 7800X3D might be the smarter pick.

Since your nephew is actively upgrading, I'd suggest getting the 7800X3D. It offers better gaming performance overall. Just keep in mind that even though the 9700X is cheaper, if gaming performance is the main goal, the 7800X3D is worth it. Plus, he can always sell his old parts to offset the cost.

Totally agree! Better performance can often lead to a longer lifespan for his setup.
