Is Mesh WiFi a Good Solution for My Home?

I'm looking into options for internet connectivity in my house. An electrician quoted me over $1100 to install one ethernet port due to tricky router placement and some hazards, like ceiling tiles. He also offered to set up a mesh WiFi system for $100 less, where I would just plug one node in my room to connect to my PC. However, I'm concerned because my bedroom is really far from the main router by the fridge, and if he places the node close to the router, could the distance between the nodes affect performance? The electrician claimed he uses it at home without lag, but I'm skeptical, especially since my door will be closed. I already paid a deposit for the installation, but now I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice.

Honestly, if running ethernet is that expensive, look into powerline adapters. They can be way cheaper and use your existing power lines. They work surprisingly well unless you have really old wiring.

I have old wiring, too, so I can’t go that route. But it’s a good suggestion!

Powerline would be an excellent alternative for most homes, but just check your setup first.

Spending $1000 to set up mesh is absurd. Seriously, it involves just plugging in a couple of nodes. It’s something you could easily do yourself. Just buy the nodes and set them up in minutes.

SmartHomeDude -

No kidding! You should definitely consider doing it yourself; it could save you a ton.

You can buy quality mesh systems for about $400, way better than what he's charging.

Seriously, just tell that electrician to forget it and find someone better. You should also check if your internet provider can arrange to move the router closer for free.

SkepticFinder -

Yeah, I’d contact your provider. Sometimes they do arrangements that save you a headache.

Definitely don’t settle for overpriced quotes. Get a second opinion!

$1100? For that much, the guy must be making a fortune! Those ceiling tiles are hardly a danger. Sounds to me like he’s quoting a "go away" price because he doesn’t want to do the job.

BuildMaster88 -

For real! I had a complete setup done for my whole place for way less. This guy just seems sketchy.

NerdyNate21 -

A drop ceiling should definitely cut that price. You could get a decent setup for much cheaper!

Those prices sound off. $1100 for one ethernet port but only $1000 for a WiFi setup? Doesn't add up. You might want to run the ethernet yourself and get a decent router for a better price. If the electrician seems eager to overcharge, just steer clear of him.

CleverBean40 -

Right? Sounds like he doesn't want the job and is just throwing out these wild quotes to send you packing.

CuriousCat29 -

I mean, these quotes seem exaggerated. Just check if there are any reliable local companies that can do it for you!
