I'm currently using a Ryzen 7 3700X with an RTX 5070 and a Gigabyte X570 Gaming X motherboard. I'm considering upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5700X. Is this a good upgrade, or will I need to also upgrade my motherboard?

Upgrading to the 5700X is a solid choice for performance boost, especially for gaming. Just keep in mind that you may need to update your motherboard's firmware. But if you're looking for a good performance increase at a reasonable cost, this is it!
The choice really depends on what kind of performance increase you're after as well as your budget. If you're stuck on finding that X3D, check the used market; you might get lucky! Don't forget, upgrading to a high-end 5xxx chip is as far as you can go without needing a new motherboard and DDR5.
The 5700X gives you a great upgrade path without needing a new motherboard just yet. If you're into gaming, also consider the X3D CPUs—they tend to perform better, but they can be a bit hard to find.
