I've built my PC about a decade ago and haven't really gamed much since my daughter was born four years ago. Now I'm looking to upgrade so I can play Civilization VII. I want to find some solid recommendations for upgrades that won't completely drain my wallet but will let me enjoy the game and stay somewhat current for the next few years. Here are my current specs:
- Motherboard: MSI 990FXA Gaming AM3+/AM3
- Processor: AMD FX-8350 @ 4GHz
- Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 1070
- Memory: 16GB DDR3
I appreciate any insights you can share!

Honestly, with your current setup, you might be able to run Civ VII at minimum settings, but you won't get the best experience. It's probably time to consider building something new. If you want to play at higher settings, a full upgrade will be necessary, especially for a better CPU and RAM.
Since you have access to a Microcenter, check their deals for a good CPU and motherboard combo. You might also want to upgrade your RAM. If you can find a solid deal, try to stay around $500. You can keep using your current GTX 1070 while you save for a better graphics card later.
Make sure to check the required specs for Civ VII; it seems like you're pretty close to the minimum, but if you want to enjoy the game without issues, you might still want to upgrade a few things. Maybe see if your current system performs well enough to hold off on a full rebuild for now?
Thanks for the tip! I'll check out the performance first and see how it runs!
What kind of CPU are you thinking about? I heard AMD Ryzen chips are pretty good for gaming these days!
