Can I Use an 8-Pin GPU in a 16-Pin Motherboard Slot?

I mistakenly believed everything would fit together and now I'm stuck wondering if I can use my Gigabyte Windforce OC RTX 5060 GPU, which has an 8-pin connector, in the 16-pin slot on my MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI motherboard. The GPU fits the slot nicely, but it doesn't seem to lock into place. Is there any workaround, or am I out of luck and need to find a different GPU?

You're all good! Physically, it's a full-length x16 slot, and even though it's electrically x8, you won't run into any issues using it as is.

I just wanted to make sure it fits in tight, though. Mine didn’t click either, but it worked fine in the end!

The RTX 5060 is designed for a full-size x16 slot, but it’s only wired to use 8 pins. You can plug it into the x16 slot without any issues. Just make sure it's seated properly even if it doesn't click into place.

I was worried about that too, but I’ve seen others use similar configurations without problems. Just ensure everything else is connected properly!

You can definitely use a GPU support bracket to hold it in place if the fit bothers you. But if you're not keen on that option, you could always return the GPU and get a different one instead.
