Why is my PC’s frame rate dropping so drastically while gaming?

I've been experiencing a significant frame rate drop in my PC whenever I start playing games. The frame rate plummets dramatically from around 600 down to just 8. My PC has been running well for the past three years without any major issues, so I'm not sure what's causing this. Does anyone have solutions or suggestions for what might be going wrong?

A useful tool is Libre Hardware Monitor. Download it and use it to track your CPU and GPU temperatures while you play. If you notice frame drops, you can check the data to see if overheating is the culprit.

Before diving into solutions, could you share your PC specs? Knowing your hardware can help us figure out if there's a bottleneck somewhere that's causing the frame drops.

One thing you should really look into is your PC's thermals. High temperatures can lead to throttling, which might cause those frame drops. It's worth checking to see if your CPU or GPU is overheating while you're gaming.
