I'm trying to get HP VM Essentials set up in my lab to learn more about it, but I've hit a snag. The trial ISOs aren't booting at all, and it seems like the documentation is quite sparse and out of date. Has anyone managed to make this work? Any tips would be appreciated!

Yeah, it can be frustrating! I've been working with HPE software for a while, and this kind of issue is pretty normal. The documentation isn't great, but I managed to set up a small lab running version 8.0.11 without too much trouble. Most of the headache was figuring out the console configuration, though. Just keep at it!
I totally get where you're coming from. But honestly, if the documentation is lacking, it raises a red flag for me. What if issues come up in production? Sometimes I wonder why even bother if we can’t rely on proper support or clear guidelines. It seems like HPE is trying really hard to compete with VMware, but they might be rushing through it.
That's a good point! They are making progress every month, but it does feel like something crucial is always missing. Hopefully, they'll improve the documentation and reliability soon!
