My Wifi Signal Dropped Drastically After Provider Change – Help!

Hey everyone! I've recently faced a frustrating issue with my Wifi signal strength. My family switched internet providers, and shortly after some workers were digging outside installing the new service, my Wifi signal dropped from a solid 5 bars to just 2. I keep getting disconnected, which is super annoying. The installation was completed today, and while our download and upload speeds have improved, my PC is still struggling with a poor connection.

Interestingly, everyone else's devices seem to be fine—it's only my PC that's affected. I use a wireless adapter, which used to work great for me, but no longer seems reliable. I've restarted everything, updated Windows, reinstalled drivers, and even bought a new Wifi adapter, but nothing has worked. I'm hoping someone here can help me troubleshoot this issue because I don't know much about Wifi setups. Thanks for any advice you can share!

It sounds like the digging might just be a coincidence, although it's possible some new router settings could be causing your problem. Places like your PC's placement could make a big difference as well; try moving it around to see if it helps.

If you're up for it, getting a spectrum analyzer could help pinpoint interference issues. Ubiquiti has a $100 version that connects to your phone, but if you're trying to save money, consider downloading a WiFi Analyzer app on your Android device. Finding out what's causing interference could be key—maybe neighbor networks are interfering, especially if your router switched channels after the installation.

I actually found that my parents had some little devices by their computers, and when I plugged one in near my PC, my signal jumped back to 4/5 bars! Looks like the new Wifi has a shorter range, and I'll need to get one of those myself.

Since this issue is just with your PC, I'd suggest looking at potential RF interference or where your antennas are placed. If the router was moved slightly, that could affect your connection significantly while others are fine. Also, consider locking your adapter to one band instead of letting it switch automatically; this can sometimes stabilize the connection better. If your adapter uses external antennas, try repositioning them for better reception.”,

Did the installation involve any changes to the hardware at your place, like a new router? Sometimes, new hardware doesn’t provide the same coverage as the old one, which might explain why you're facing issues now. You could also be positioned in a part of your home that gets worse reception with the new setup.

It's still the same router; they just rewired it. My mom works from home upstairs and has a great connection, which is so confusing because I’m right next to her!

One possibility could be that your PC is connecting to the 5GHz band while others are on the 2.4GHz band. The 5GHz band typically offers faster speeds but shorter range, so that might explain your weak signal.
