Should I Give My Phone Password to the Repair Shop?

I'm dealing with a frustrating issue where my phone can turn on, but the screen doesn't respond to touch at all. I took it to a local repair shop because they said they needed my phone password to make some changes in the settings. When I pressed them for details, they didn't provide any clear answers. This made me hesitant to give them my password. I asked my dad to take my phone in since I can't go myself due to a sprained ankle, but he also struggled to get solid info from the shop. This isn't the first time I've had a screen issue fixed there, but they never asked for my password before. Is it normal for them to request that? Should I feel cautious?

It's totally understandable to feel cautious. Trust your gut on this one; it sounds a bit sketchy. Stick to your decision of not sharing the password unless you feel completely secure. Always better to err on the side of caution!

Honestly, there's little reason for them to ask for your password just to replace a screen. If the screen's not working, they can’t even get into settings without fixing it first. Just tell them to change the screen and keep your password private.

If your phone is an Apple device, I'd understand some requests for your password, particularly if they're working on software issues. But since you mentioned it's a Samsung F62, they really shouldn't need it at all. Technicians can run diagnostic tests without a password, so I'd advise against giving it out.

Just so you know, if they were worried about software issues, they might want the lock code for a factory reset. But in your case, it sounds more like an issue with the hardware, so you were right to be suspicious.

Typically, a repair shop shouldn't need your password to fix a screen issue. They might say that for testing purposes, but it’s safer to go in person, unlock the phone, and oversee the process to ensure they're not accessing anything private.
