Need Help Deciding on a CPU for My New Build

Hey everyone, I'm a bit stuck on what CPU to choose for my new PC build. I've got a Corsair 3500X case, and I started with a MAG X890E MSI motherboard paired with a 9950X3D processor. Unfortunately, no matter what cooling solution I tried, my temps were hitting around 82°C while gaming, which seemed high to me. I swapped out cooling options twice: first with a Kraken 360 and then an Arctic Liquid 360, but the temps didn't improve. I sent back the 9950X3D because I wondered if I had a faulty chip. Now, I'm considering switching to the 285K, but I've heard mixed opinions about it being similar in performance to the 9950X3D. There's also the upcoming 14900K that some say has great pricing. I'm primarily looking to use this PC for decompiling, recompiling, video editing, and gaming. What do you all think? Thanks in advance!

If you really think your setup is underperforming, you might want to try another 9950X3D rather than switching to the 285K. Test with a different cooling solution, but generally, those temps are workable. Make sure your case has good airflow too!

Honestly, 82°C isn't terrible, especially under load. If you're gaming or doing tasks that push the CPU, it's typical to see those kinds of temps. As for switching to the 285K, it really depends on your priorities. If you primarily game, the 9800X3D might serve you better. But for productivity tasks where more cores matter, the 9950X3D could still be the way to go. Don't rush the switch if you're getting decent performance!

That's what I thought too! But after looking around, many people mention temps in the 50-68°C range while gaming, so I worry that something might be off with my setup. Just trying to get the best performance!

I'd say go for the 285K if it's cheaper and you can’t seem to fix your cooling issue. It’s well-regarded too! Just be aware of what you need more: raw gaming power or productivity. That'll help narrow it down!

Thanks for the advice! I'm leaning towards the 285K mainly for better temps during my heavier tasks.
