Hi there! I'm considering buying an iMac to use for school, streaming, gaming, and general internet browsing. I'm trying to decide between getting an iMac from 2012-2015 or one from 2016-2020. I understand that the newer models are obviously better, but they're also pretty pricey. I'm looking for a used model that's in excellent condition. I've heard some folks still find value in the older models since upgrades aren't always necessary unless they really need it. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Buying anything from 2016-2020 is risky at this point; it’s already considered old. And models from 2012-2015 are basically dinosaurs. You'll likely run into performance issues sooner rather than later with Intel Macs. It's one thing to keep a device for a few years; it's another to have one that's already at the end of its life cycle. If you're looking for longevity, the M1 is a better bet, even if it's a bit pricier.
You should really consider going for an M1 iMac if you can swing it. The newer models will last you longer, especially since Apple recently stated that macOS Tahoe will be the last version supported on Intel Macs. Plus, you can check out certified refurbished iMacs; they come with a warranty and AppleCare options, which could be a good compromise between cost and quality.
Thanks for the heads up! I’m definitely going to look into the refurbished models. I saw the latest iMac is over $1000, which is steep for me. I usually take good care of my stuff, so I'm not keen on getting AppleCare; I'm more about saving money than getting locked into another subscription.

I get that! Not everyone needs the latest tech, and the new iMac is nice but seriously out of my budget. I just want something reliable. I've had a MacBook in the past, but this would be my first iMac. I hear the M1 is a great choice, but that was released in 2021, and they're still running over $1000!
