Should I Choose a MacBook Air or Pro for Learning DevOps?

I'm currently working with AWS networking services and planning to switch to a DevOps role soon. This means I need to learn how to set up and run Kubernetes and Docker. I'm looking to buy a personal laptop to facilitate this learning; however, performance isn't my top priority since it's mainly for educational purposes. I'm considering whether a MacBook Air with 256 GB of storage would be enough for my needs. If I decide to go for a MacBook Air with 512 GB, it might make sense to just stretch my budget and get a MacBook Pro instead. So, which should I choose: a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro?

Go for the option that offers the most memory and storage. If you're open to alternatives, a used high-spec ThinkPad with a Linux distro could serve you better without the high price tag of a MacBook.

The MacBook Air is a solid choice! Just make sure to bump the RAM to 24 GB, and you should have no issues with running your apps smoothly.

I have an M2 Air and it runs everything fine, even with many programs like VSCode and Docker Desktop open at once. Just look for at least 24 GB of RAM if you're multitasking heavily.

Definitely go for the 512 GB storage option. Even then, you might run into issues with Docker image builds without regularly clearing system caches.

Honestly, you might not need a powerful machine at all. With AWS, your laptop can act as a terminal. If you really want to run Docker and Kubernetes locally, I’d recommend a Linux-capable machine. If you're on a budget, consider a Raspberry Pi setup or just sticking with a low-end laptop and leveraging AWS for your learning.

If you're leaning toward a MacBook, remember to buy one for reasons beyond just learning Docker/Kubernetes. Any modern laptop with decent specs will suffice for that.
