Why isn’t my external disc drive reading DVDs?

I recently bought an external disc drive for my laptop, and while it reads music CDs and CD-ROM games without any issues, it fails to recognize DVDs. When I insert a DVD to watch a show, nothing happens; it either loads endlessly or tells me the drive is empty before ejecting it. However, this same DVD works fine in my Xbox and PlayStation, so I'm puzzled about what's going on. By the way, it's not a Blu-ray, and I tried playing it with VLC too, but that didn't work either. Just to note, other DVDs work in my external drive without a hitch.

Have you checked if your drive actually supports DVDs? Some external drives are only CD-ROM drives and can't read DVDs at all.

Since you mentioned that the DVD works in other devices, have you tried playing other DVDs in your external drive? That could help narrow down the issue.

Yeah, that DVD should be fine since it works elsewhere. If the other DVDs are loading normally, maybe there’s a specific problem with that one. Definitely worth a clean to ensure there’s no residue.

Good to hear that other DVDs work in your drive! It sounds like there might be a problem with that specific DVD. Try cleaning it gently with a microfiber cloth. Sometimes, dirt or scratches can cause issues with reading.
