Seeking Advice on Server Management and Security Improvements

Hey folks, I'm looking for guidance on managing servers and improving security. We're a mid-sized company with around 100 users connected to our server via RDP. Our system administrator isn't very clear with technical terms, and unfortunately, he's set up our systems using counterfeit Windows and Office tools. Our server's processor is a decade old, and we're generating multiple gigabytes of data daily. It's slow and buggy, and after a hacking incident last year where we lost critical data, including invoicing records, I'm really concerned. The admin is against cloud solutions, citing cyber threats, but we recently resolved a hacking incident by paying ransom. Now, he's blaming the users, even though it's just basic use of Outlook and ERP. I'm looking for ways to secure and modernize our system without breaking the bank, especially since he's quoting very high prices for upgrades. Also, can users be at risk if they click on the wrong links while using RDP? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

If your sysadmin isn’t actually performing as a competent administrator, you really need to reevaluate your IT strategy. A well-structured IT infrastructure can be set up affordably and securely, whether on-premise or in the cloud. In my experience, firing a problematic sysadmin was one of the best moves we made—it's amazing what a capable tech can do once the outdated practices are out the door.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’ll definitely take this into account when discussing it with my management.

Honestly, you might need to consider parting ways with your current sysadmin and hiring a Managed Service Provider (MSP) to sort out the mess. They can help get your systems secure and up to date without the headache. Just be thorough in the selection process, because not all MSPs are reliable. Find one that understands your needs and can provide ongoing support.

Could you elaborate a bit more on why you think getting rid of the sysadmin is the best route? I'm trying to gather some points for my management.

I agree, it’s a tough call. Sometimes, a capable admin can make all the difference, especially if they can work cohesively with an MSP.

Document everything you can about your current setup—your licensing issues and hardware/software warranty statuses are likely a mess. Present this to your management, and if they still ignore the problems or don’t make any changes, it might be time to consider looking for a new job. Getting an MSP involved could be a game-changer for your security.
