I've got some extra cash and I'm thinking about upgrading my setup from a 1080p 144Hz display to a 1440p ultrawide 144Hz monitor. I initially considered going for an RTX 5090, but the prices are just outrageous. I'm curious if jumping to an RTX 5080 is worthwhile. Will I see a noticeable performance improvement?

Absolutely! Just go for the 5080! Nvidia tends to offer better performance overall. It's a no-brainer for me!

What makes you say that? I mean, even though I have a 5070, I’ve found AMD cards are great value, especially under $600, unless you really need CUDA for specific tasks or you're into heavy path-tracing.

There are plenty of benchmarks comparing the 9070 and 5080 that show a solid difference. If you're aiming for 1440p ultrawide, the 5080 can usually push above 144Hz in most games, so it should serve you well! But honestly, I'd recommend getting your new monitor first and see how your 9070 handles it. You might be surprised by its performance at 3440x1440!

Totally agree! Plus, FSR4 balanced on 1440p ultrawide should look great too.

Good call on the monitor first! I’m also eyeing an OLED upgrade since I've had my current monitor for a decade.

I’m using a 7900 on a UWQHD setup, and it runs great. Your 9070 is pretty powerful too, so seriously consider getting the monitor first and testing it out before splurging on the 5080.

Honestly, you might want to wait for the next generation of GPUs. Just a thought!
