Is It Worth Learning AI/ML as a Freshman If I’m Not Sure I’ll Use It?

Hey everyone! I'm a first-year Computer Science student and I'm just diving into the tech world. I've been studying the basics and experimenting with different areas. AI and machine learning are super popular right now, and I keep hearing how crucial they are for the future. However, I don't really see myself working in AI at this point; my interests lean more towards back-end development, systems, and data work, but I'm still figuring it all out. So, I'm wondering: should I learn AI/ML now even if it's not my main interest, or should I focus on topics that I find more engaging and maybe revisit AI later if it becomes relevant for a job or a project? Thanks for any advice!

I think the answer to whether you should learn something new is usually a yes. But I get it, balancing interests can be tough! Don't stress about mastering everything now; just keep an eye on developments in AI since it’s shaping many fields.

You're right! I just worry about falling behind. Maybe I'll dip my toes into AI while still focusing on back-end stuff.

If AI isn't your passion, I wouldn't force it. Most tech jobs won't require you to be an AI expert, just a general understanding is usually enough. Focus on what you love!

True, but having a basic understanding of how AI works can be beneficial since a lot of industries are integrating it. It might be worth learning some fundamentals!
