Can I Monitor My Home Servers with an Old PC?

Hey folks! I've been mulling over a unique idea for my home server setup that I wanted to share. I've got a homelab with various servers, including a downloads server and a DIY NAS, along with some switches. Recently, I picked up an old HP mini PC that has 4GB of storage and used to run a lighter version of Windows XP for managing a camera system. I previously installed Alpine Linux on it, and it's been working well. My thought is to create a webpage that displays the status of my servers (whether they're on or off) and provides some other stats. Is building this kind of monitoring system feasible with my old PC? If so, any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

You can absolutely set something like this up! Consider using tools like Cockpit, Webmin, or Nagios for monitoring your servers. I've been using Cockpit for my setup, and it works great for handling a few servers.

I would definitely try that!

It's hard to give a solid answer without knowing the full specs of your mini PC. Just to clarify, when you say 4GB of ROM, do you mean RAM?

No, I think it has 1GB of RAM; the 4GB is for storage, and it has a pretty weak 700MHz SOC CPU.

Why not? Almost anything you can think of can be done with a bit of effort. You want your HP mini PC to host a web app for monitoring your servers, right? A great starting point for that would be Cockpit. Just a heads up, following Linux forums or communities can also connect you with more enthusiasts in this area!

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm a bit new to programming, but I have some knowledge of Linux devices. I'll definitely give Cockpit a shot!
