I'm having some trouble with an older PC I got secondhand from a friend. Initially, everything was running smoothly, but I started experiencing issues that made me wipe the OS and check the hardware. I've tried all kinds of software solutions, including updating the BIOS firmware.
Now, I'm focusing on the memtest results for my RAM. The computer has two 16GB RAM sticks. After running multiple memtests, one of the sticks shows a ton of errors regardless of which of the optimized slots I use, while the other stick only shows a few errors in the same slots.
This has led me to think the problem lies within the RAM sticks themselves, especially since one stick consistently performs worse than the other, no matter where I put them. I know memtest errors could indicate a bad stick, a CPU problem, or even a motherboard issue, but I feel my logic around the RAM sticks makes sense.
This is my first time troubleshooting a PC, and while I'm a strong problem solver overall, I'm not deeply versed in hardware. I want to avoid spending money on new RAM if there's a chance the issue could be something bigger. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're on the right track! Since you've seen the problems follow the bad stick no matter where you put it, that's a strong sign that it's likely the RAM causing the issues. Most RAM these days has a lifetime warranty, so if you can confirm that it’s faulty, you might be able to get a replacement without spending extra cash.

Thanks for the help! I might try to borrow a friend's setup to memtest the sticks in another machine to be absolutely sure. Cheers!
